Mexican ne’er-do-wells are being offered the chance to trade their traditional shoot-’em-ups for a less lethal alternative, Reuters reports.

Mexico City’s newly-elected mayor Marcelo Ebrard has decided to purge the city’s mean streets by dishing out cash or a free Xbox for every handgun, while anyone surrendering a heavy calibre-weapon, such as a machine gun, will earn a shiny new PC.

Ebrard launched the initiative yesterday in the “notorious inner-city barrio of Tepito” – a “warren of scruffy homes and market stalls a few blocks north of the capital’s main square”. Police last month invaded Tepito, storming a tenement known locally as “The Fortress” and reputed to be the hub of “major cocaine and marijuana distribution” operations.

The guns-for-Xboxes organisers say they’ve got 100 computers ready to go. Each is worth 8,500 pesos ($769) and comes “equipped with software donated by Microsoft”. The first day of the scheme saw 17 guns handed over, including a dozen from Tepito.

If the cunning plan proves successful, it will be extended to Iztapalapa – another miscreant-packed barrio also visited by police who last week “expropriated a six-block neighborhood filled with stores selling parts torn from stolen cars”. ®

Motivation

Also das muss ich einfach posten … die Unternehmen im Land der Berge koennten sich hier was abschauen ….

heute musste ich bei einer Praesentation eines Kollegen aushelfen, weil er ins Strudeln geraten ist. Hab also 36 Slides zusammengestellt und die mit meinem direkten Vorgesetzten durchbesprochen. Waehrend ich noch am Ausbessern war, kommt der Vice President zu mir und klopft mir auf die Schulter und meint: tolle Praesentation. Und ich hab mich gar nicht ausgekannt, zumal niemand ausser mir die Praesantation noch hat.

Anscheinend ist mein Chief direkt zu ihm gegangen und hat ihm von meiner Arbeit erzaehlt. Nach einigen Minuten, nachdem ich dann die Praesentation ausgeschickt hab, ist dann auch der Vice President for Strategic Marketing zu mir gekommen und hat mir fuer meine tolle Praesentation gedankt (!)

Und das war echt ein Motivationsbooster … obwohl ein anderer morgen beim Kunden praesentiert, hab ich intern dafuer Anerkennung bekommen.

Ich finde es wichtig, dass man nicht immer nur jammert und motschkert , sondern man sich auch mal sagt, was gut am Job ist und worueber man sich gefreut hat.

Three surfers find a new way to drink — online

EW YORK (Reuters) – Three U.S. surfing friends whose jobs moved them to different cities have come up with a way to continue their weekly drinking session — in an online pub that even has happy hours.

The founders of CherryTAP claim to have set up the Internet’s first online pub that gives users the nuances of a pub but from the comfort of their home computer or laptop.

“We liked to go after a long day at work to a bar and hang out and have a few drinks,” said Bill Lee, 36, a freelance marketer from San Francisco who was one of the three founders.

“When we moved apart we couldn’t do that anymore so we wanted to recreate that online.”

Lee said CherryTAP, which now has over 700,000 users in the United States and Britain, was different from other social networking sites as you did not need to have a network of friends already. It also did not take advertising.

Instead CherryTAP has just launched “happy hours,” where users pay $100 to sponsor an hour-long session, with their name appearing at the top of the site and other users raising their glasses to toast them.

“Users can give each other virtual drinks and this makes people more comfortable to chat to each other,” said Lee who set up the site with friends Mike Headlund, 28, a computer consultant, and kiteboard instructor Ryan Riccitelli, 34.

“The person who sponsors happy hour becomes the most popular person on that site and they get 15 minutes of fame.”

Instead of a barman, who in a real pub is often used as a sounding board, users can send in questions which are answered by the community and there is a team of volunteer bouncers to ensure people in the online pub behaved.

“You don’t have to drink but it can be an icebreaker. You can give people virtual drinks and get chatting,” said Lee.

Wien ist in der Liste der teuersten Städte weltweit um einen Platz auf Rang zwölf abgerutscht. Oslo bleibt einer Studie des britischen Magazins “The Economist” zu Folge teuerste Stadt der Welt. 

Berlin und New York billiger als Wien
In Wien sind der Studie zu Folge die Lebenshaltungskosten geringer geworden, wenn auch nur in kleinem Ausmaß. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr hat sich Wien um einen Rang “verbilligt”, liegt nun aktuell auf Platz zwölf der Liste der teuersten Städte der Welt.

Wien ist damit immer noch deutlich teurer als etwa München, Berlin, Brüssel oder New York.

Acht europäische Städte unter Top Ten
Die teuerste Stadt der Welt bleibt laut “The Economist” Oslo. Es hat bereits im Vorjahr Tokio abgelöst. Die Plätze zwei bis vier belegen Paris, Kopenhagen und London. Tokio liegt nun auf Platz fünf. Insgesamt liegen von den zehn teuersten Städten der Welt acht in Europa, nur Tokio und Osaka machen eine Ausnahme.

Verantwortlich dafür sind demnach die starken europäischen Währungen und die höheren Preise in Europa, während ein schwacher Yen und eine geringere Teuerung Japan billiger machten, so Studienautor Jon Copestake.

Preise in 130 Ländern verglichen
Als billigste Großstadt weltweit gilt demnach Teheran. Die Lebenshaltungskosten liegen etwa bei einem Drittel von New York.

Die Studie hat die Economist Intelligence Unit, die Forschungsabteilung des britischen Wochenmagazin “The Economist”, erstellt. Sie vergleicht Preise und Produkte in mehr als 130 Ländern und ermittelt so die Lebenshaltungskosten.
